BOOKING A TRAIN TICKET

  • I’d like to book a return ticket from London to Leeds for today, returning on Saturday.
  • I’d like to book a ticket on the Eurostar to Paris late Friday afternoon.
  • Are there any trains leaving Paddington earlier in the morning
  • Is there a train that will get me to Glasgow by 10 in the morning?

HIRING A CAR

  • I’d like to hire (US: rent) a car for a week.
  • I’d like something with unlimited mileage.
  • Do you have any convertibles available?
  • I’d like air conditioning / an automatic transmission / power steering, if possible.
  • What additional insurance charges will there be?
  • Can I return the car in Newark?

CHANGES

  • I’m booked on flight UA 960 from Washington to Munich tomorrow afternoon. I’d like to know whether I could take the same flight a day later.
  • Will there be any charges or penalties?
  • Could I change my booking if I paid the next higher fare?
  • There’s been a change in my travel plans, and I’ll be going up to Chicago tomorrow. I’m supposed to be flying from Oakland to Hamburg on Friday, so I was wondering if I could change my ticket to fly out of Chicago instead.
  • I’ve missed my connecting flight. Are there any seats available on the later flight?
  • Could you put me on standby for the earlier flight?

BOOKING A FLIGHT

  • I’m flying economy/business/first class.
  • Mr Schneider will be flying on 4 October and returning on 11 October. Are there any non-stop flights available?
  • I’m flying to several airports in the US and would like to book my itinerary.
  • First, Ms Friedrichs is flying from Stuttgart to San Francisco on 18 November, then on to Houston and Boston, and back to Stuttgart on 28 November.
  • Will it be possible to change any of these bookings without a penalty?
  • Could you book me on [airline X]? I’ve got a frequent flyer account with them.
  • Will I need to confirm the reservation for the return flight?

  • Dialogue: Arriving at an airport
  • Bernd is flying to the US on business. We accompany him as he arrives in the country.

After landing
Bernd: Excuse me, this sign says “Arrivals”. I’m actually a transit passenger.
Airport employee: You’ll still have to pass through here, sir, because you need to go through immigration first, and then through customs.
Bernd: Oh, I see. But I don’t have to pick up my bags, do I? They’re checked through to Phoenix.
Airport employee: You’ll still have to pick up your bags for customs and then check them in again right afterwards. It’s really quick.
Bernd: Right.
Airport employee: So just follow the signs to immigration.
Bernd: Thanks a lot.

At immigration
Immigration officer: Welcome, sir.
Bernd: Hello.
Immigration officer: So you’re arriving from Frankfurt today.
Bernd: Yes, that’s right.
Immigration officer: What is the purpose of your trip, sir?
Bernd: Business. I’m attending a trade fair in Phoenix. I’m a publisher.
Immigration officer: How long are you staying?
Bernd: Just for three days. I fly back on Sunday.
Immigration officer: Well, then, enjoy your stay!
Bernd: Thank you.

At the baggage carousel
Bernd: Have all the bags from Frankfurt been unloaded now?
Other passenger: I hope not! I’m still waiting for mine. And so are the people back there.
Bernd: Well, then there’s a chance they’ll still come.
Other passenger: If they’re not here in five minutes, I’ll check with the lost-luggage desk.

At customs
Customs official: Hello, sir.
Bernd: Hello.
Customs official: Could I see your customs declaration form?
Bernd: Here it is.
Customs official: Do you have anything to declare? Are you carrying any agricultural items with you? Meat? Fruit or vegetables? Plants?
Bernd: No.
Customs official: You say on your declaration form that you’re
carrying samples.
Bernd: Yes, sample brochures, calendars and magazines. I’m a
publisher, and I want to show them at a trade fair.
Customs official: Would you mind opening your bags for me?
Bernd: No problem.
Customs official: OK, I think that’s all I need to see. Thanks.
Bernd: That was all?
Customs official: Yes. Enjoy your stay, sir.
Bernd: OK, thanks a lot.
